Today was the beginning of our focus on celebrations. In the morning an internet scavenger hunt led us through a diverse range of celebrations, across different cultures and times. Among other things, we discovered why Oberammergau is famous, what Pamploma is known for and what happens at Deepavali.

In the afternoon we read the book by Julie Vivas and Margaret Wild after which this term is named. There was much to discuss after this reading and we demonstrated our understanding of the deeper meaning of this book through poetry.

Today’s exemplar is by Katie.

Fabric for Toys

Velvet
almost as soft
as Miriam’s kindness.

Rose thorns
as piercing
as Jacoba’s words and
scorning looks.

We sewed
an elephant
for Sarah, an owl for
David
so that the celebrations could begin.
