Teaching as Inquiry
‘Teaching as Inquiry’ is a cyclical process that teachers and leaders use to help them reflect on the effectiveness of their practice, its impact on students, and what changes they need to make. The fundamental purpose of ‘Teaching as Inquiry’ is to improve teachers’ teaching and outcomes for students. Using a professional inquiry cycle, teachers are guided through a process that assists them to inquire into and critically reflect on their effectiveness, and its impact on students, and what changes they need to make. The following process has been designed by eTime, to assist schools to make the necessary changes in student achievement through a professional inquiry approach. School leaders' meeting For leaders to discuss the process and schedule dates. Staff meeting For all teachers to gain a clear understanding of the purpose, benefits, characteristics of a culture of inquiry, the process, and their role in it. Plan and implement a ‘Teaching as Inquiry’ cycle using the professional inquiry cycle. Identification of students’ learning needs and desired outcomes based on analysis of student achievement data. Identification of teachers’ learning needs. Engagement of teachers in professional learning to develop their knowledge and skills. Planning of learning experiences to implement new knowledge and skills. Engagement of students in new approaches. Collection of data to show the impact of new approaches on student achievement. Review the process and plan a second ‘Teaching as Inquiry’ cycle.
